Bear River collected his second stakes win of the year on Dec. 21 with a front-running score in the $100,000 Richard Scherer Memorial S. at Fair Grounds.
The chestnut 3-year-old son of Flameaway is one of six stakes winners this year for the top-10 Second-Crop sire, who has a pair of graded stakes winners in Chile in addition to his four black-type winners domestically.
Going 5 ½-furlongs on the turf on Saturday, Bear River immediately went to the lead and was pressed through a half-mile in :45.90. Minnesota Ready mounted a strong challenge at the top of the stretch, but Bear River kicked clear in the final furlong to win by 2 ¼-lengths in 1:03.61 on the firm turf.
With the win, Bear River is now 5-0-2 in 18 starts, earning $383,848 for owner Charles Marquis. Bear River was bred in Kentucky by Dreamfields Farm, Don Brady and Bendan Burke.
